Get estimates from multiple contractors and get everything in writing before work begins. In our case, very few contractors were even responding to calls for quotes. For those that did, only actually delivered a price, and it was VERY high.
In our job, we hired contractors to sand wood floors down to bare wood, and to measure, cut, and install our new countertops. We didn't have the experience or tools for those jobs, and didn't want to waste time learning on big tasks.
