Email via Malware

It seems like about twice a month that I receive an email from a friend or client with nothing but a link to a .cz, .ru or other questionable site.  So far, every one of these has been a mass email from their account (sent to all their contacts) after their account password has been compromised.  My guess is that some malware takes hold in the machine, captures their password the next time they log in to (usually Yahoo) email, and uses an API after that to send out spam with the newly-acquired credentials.

For Sale: 2007 Suzuki SV650

It's time to sell my bike, so rather than keep posting this same information all over the place, I'll list it all here, one time, and link back to it.  For Sale is a 2007 Suzuki SV650 (naked, not the 'S' model), with about 14,700 miles on it.  I'm asking $3,900.  It's a GREAT learner bike; very quick, light weight, and agile.  Small enough to learn on, but large enough to be fun (and useful) for a more experienced rider.  Fuel injection is a very nice plus.

The mobile web and Responsive Web Design

I've finally committed some small piece of time and mental bandwidth to "solving" the problem of making my (and our clients') web sites more mobile-friendly.  For a couple clients, this is a huge issue and we need a solution.  Here's a great article on Responsive Web Design, which is my current favorite solution:

Tethered Internet access using Android and Bluetooth

For less than $10, I bought a USB bluetooth dongle for my laptop.  Ubuntu recognized it right away as a bluetooth radio and started using it.  For a test, I paired my laptop with my Android phone, which was also easy and flawless.  What I didn't expect was that immediately after the pairing, a dialog popped up on the laptop telling me about a new network that had been detected.  The system automatically uses the Android Internet connection (cell data) without any effort on my part.  Sweet!  Bottom line.

Recovering a Droid X stuck at the Motorola Logo

One of our Droid X phone's had a problem yesterday, where it wouldn't respond to anything.  On shutdown/reboot, it got stuck at the red Motorola logo and wouldn't move past it...even after being on the charger for 10 hours.  I started looking closely at the phone, and noticed that the buttons along the bottom didn't feel like they were 'clicking' when pressed...they gave no response at all, like they were part of the case instead.  I started 'flicking' at the edge of the buttons with my fingernail, and got them to pop back into place.

Cloning a VirtualBox Win XP installation to a larger drive

For whatever combination of reasons, I haven't had any good luck in cloning Windows XP installations to a new, larger drive.  It just has never worked for me until today (sort of).  I want to document my success in copying a Win XP Pro installation from a 10gb VirtualBox VDI to a 30gb VirtualBox VDI.  It's not the same as moving Windows to a 'real' disk, but it's better than anything else I've been able to do so far.

REA Board of Education Candidate Questions

At the Request of the Roscommon Education Association, I've provided the following answers (the questions were sent to me via regular mail by the REA).1. As you view Roscommon Area Public Schools, what do you see as the strengths and weaknesses of the K-12 program? What would you do to maintain and improve the strengths? How would you address the weaknesses? I’ll start this response with a disclaimer.

    Community Input Forum

Tonight, the Roscommon Area Public Schools hosted a community forum at the high school, where they collected input for areas to cut in the upcoming budget year.  We heard a pretty good (if brief) presentation about the funding sources (federal and state) that are being reduced, and how the combination of those reductions has surprised the district.  We then met in small groups to discuss/group-think ideas that hadn't been mentioned yet.

Migrating from Drupal 5 to Drupal 7

This blog (the one where you're reading this text) was originally published with Drupal 5.  I've been exploring ways to upgrade all the way to Drupal 7, now that it's out and available, but had been struggling with an easy way to get my old 'blog' entries moved over... there wasn't a lot there (something like 66 entries), but some of them still get click-throughs once in a while, and I hate to just 'give up' on a challenge like that.

    RAPS board candidacy "platform"

Since I announced that I am running for school board, I've had several people ask me about my 'platform'.  It seems fair that I should at least talk about my points of view on things, my history and experience, and my interests, so you get an idea if I'm the right kind of candidate for you.  About MeFirst, a little about my history and background.  My wife and I both grew up in the Harrison Community School District, just down the road from Roscommon.

    Statewide Fund equity balances

Interesting article today from the Free Press: Database: See how much your district has put aside for a rainy day downloaded the entire state's data and dumped it into spreadsheet formats...interesting reading, for sure.  I wish I had more time today to study it closely.

    School Board election

Well, it's official.  I'm running for the Roscommon Area Public Schools (RAPS) board position that will be filled in the May 3rd election.  It's a trying time for the school district, with ARRA grant money running out and proposed state budget cuts in the works.  I'd like to collect thoughts and ideas (mine and others) here in the open, so we can bat them around publicly and easily.  Please come out and vote on May 3rd!!

    Palm Pre Tips and Tricks

I keep finding myselg (re)scouring the Internet for these instructions...maybe having them here will help me next time. If they helped you, leave me a note!

    1. Connect the Pre (in dev mode) to the usb port/cord

    2. Change to the directory where novacom is installed
    cd /opt/Palm/novacom

    H1N1 Information

Given the number of questions from friends and family about the H1N1 outbreak, I thought I'd re-publish this information, originally assembled by my favorite Infection Control expert. There are a few related attachments that include some more details. Stay healthy everyone!
Why is the media playing this flu up so terribly strong - like everyone is going to die as soon as they get the H1N1? Why and how is the H1N1 so different?

    Two reasons:

    Don't call it a shutdown

So, the State of Michigan's government was officially shut down for a couple hours today, before a budget could be passed by the Legislature. Why we had to get 2 hours into the new fiscal year before a budget could get pushed through is way beyond me, especially given the notably 'soft' schedule maintained by the Senate and House.
